Blizzard, the company that made StarCraft, is a multimillion dollar company. They can afford to use the best technologies with huge teams working on huge salaries. Most independent game development teams consist of a few people doing multiple jobs each. They have an almost non-existent budget, and usually get payed nothing until the game gets sold.
Why is this Important?
Where do you think companies like blizzard came from? They most likely started selling computer games from a garage, living off of (Insert Instant Noodle Product Here) and Bawls. Indie Developer teams can go from selling a game for $5 to a few hundred people, to selling a $60 dollar game to millions of people.

Indie games can be fun and addictive, also they are outrageously cheap! So what are you waiting for, go find an indie game and spend your $5. You might mean the difference between a game becoming a best seller, or it becoming crap.
