Most independent game development teams consist of a few people doing multiple jobs each. They have an almost non-existent budget, and usually get payed nothing until the game gets sold.
Why is this Important?
Where do you think companies like blizzard came from? They most likely started selling computer games from a garage, living off of (Insert Instant Noodle Product Here) and Bawls. Indie Developer teams can go from selling a game for $5 to a few hundred people, to selling a $60 dollar game to millions of people.
